I think video games started to negatively effect some people after about 1995. That's when games truly started to be addictive and competitive. Games that would make you want to skip school or work and neglect your life...
But worst of all are the MMOs, they're designed to keep you hooked and sinking your life in to them. I've seen so much drama, anger, and misery on those silly games.
I'm glad I don't play them anymore.
So... I don't think gore has ever been a big problem for most people. I think it's mostly just the addictiveness of modern games, it makes some people take them too seriously.
