Also a bit of a stretch, but the Total War series has a turn-based over world with real time battles, and strategy in the overworld is a big part of your success (where to attack, where you have to defend, trade routes, etc). Shogun 2 is my personal favourite and is a good starting point.
Battletech for the whole active sector move but TBS combat, also with mercenaries (piloting giant mechs, in this case). It's also a close-cousin.
Battle Brothers for a medieval take on map movement with a mercenary company. Very close relative, though no sector conquering, you're wandering mercs.
Wander Hero if you want Battle Brothers but with anime waifu's, deckbuilding, and peggle style melee combat added in.
Deep Sky Derelicts is one of my favourite old indies, exploring space hulks (and planets with the DLC) with small scale TBS combat with a Darkest Dungeon art-style.
Horizon's Gate if you like deep turn based combat mixed with Sid Miers Pirates!
Age of Wonders (4 out recently) for a Fantasy Civ game with Turn Based Strategy.
Renowned Explorers: International Society for unique turn based game with tight world map upgrade mechanics. Not many games allow you to embarass alligators to death and make them run off crying.
As you can imagine, I rather like this genre of turn-based tactics. :D
Is Horizon's Gate any good. I've had my eye on it for a long time but never buy it. The screens remind me of the old Uncharted Waters games for NES.
