(0- brutes always retaliate toward a person who attacked them. Look at option 3.)
1. Have a "designate sniper" somewhere hidden that uses stealth. Then they have a chance to instakill the brutes.
2. If you have a merc that is an amazing sniper you can headshot brutes with M24, Winchester or PSG1. Can't retaliate if you have no head.
3. Have a merc positioned on the side/flank outside the shotgun range. Attack at a brute from the side. Then the brute will shot toward them and miss because of the distance.
4. Before they can rush you... aim for their legs. So that way they can't rush you. This gives you an extra round to take them out.
You could also use someone with the Sudden Strike perk so they don't trigger their interrupt
But yeah, they are pretty annoying
I don't have anywhere near M24s or amazing snipers :) I just started the first village on mainland.
Putting a sniper on the roof worked but that is still such a brokenly annoying perk. It's enough that I'd have missed twice and that's it. Their attacks sometimes also cause slow so.. eh
Worst thing is the game doesn't communicate to you wtf is happening. Next think I know I shoot at a brute and randomly they shoot their own ally, or an npc. It's just dumb. Asymmetric in a dumb way also.
If you were on Ernie you should have found at least one Gewehr 98. (there are two that are 100% lootable. One is in a crate, on a watch tower, in a Outpost sector (sector between landing place and Ernie Village. It has 80% durability. Other is located in Pierre's fort. Also in a crate on a watchtower. It is around 40% durability)
You can give Gewehr 98 and make a leg shot or groin shot from a distance so you slow them down. Leg shot is better because it really slows them down and allows your team to shoot at them from the distance without fear of retaliation from the brutes.

That is heavy machine gun and he only started the game. Also those things eat all your ammo in one combat.
It isn't a good advice if someone just left Ernie and don't have access to sufficient ammo. Maybe they don't have a HMG, maybe they don't have specific ammo for a specific weapon. NATO vs Soviet ammunition. And maybe even Bobby doesn't have specific ammo to sell for 10 days.
Leg shots followed by overwatch is the thing.
I don't; have fancy lmgs or gas grenades etc yet
Failing that, carry some band-aids ;)
Not necessarily. On my first play through I went from Ernie straight for Mfumu mine and then took over Fleatown. I had 7 mercs and IMP but it is still doable with standard weapons.
To the OP post: Yeah, they are annoying, but since I play the game more like commandos I always know where the are and avoid them if I encounter them in a group until the very last when I can use positioning to my advantage, or if its one brute and one other I try to take the brute down with the stealthkill. They die just as easily from it and the remaining guy does usually have less hp then a brute.
