Just go ahead and look the wikipedia site on DMRs on the bottom and see how you find modified AUGs, FALs, G3s, M16s and so on...
So no... i'm not bothered by it.
In the game, a lot of guns straddle the line between sniper rifle and assault rifle, and there aren't perks that only affect "rifles" or whatever (only for shotguns and heavy weapons), so it really does't matter what it's tagged as.
In my gameplay, M14 is pretty much useless for me due to inadequate damage. I would only keep a M14 because of the under barrel grenade launcher. Otherwise, i much prefer the SMG/Sniper combo like Draco and Dragunov, you get best of both worlds, the Run&Gun and Sniper gameplay options. (It's Draco, not Krinkov, because of 7.62)
Ideally, for Run&Gun and Sniper combo, you'd prefer to have the Commando and PSG-1; but sadly depends on the loot drop RNGesus. The Commando can have a grenade launcher, whereas the Ak74u Draco does not.
The game devs did do a M14 sniper, it's the Gold Fever; but people didn't like the gameplay balance. Longer range, but no attachments whatsoever, no bullet magazine (single shot), so no burst fire option. Pretty sure someone already done a mod to fix Gold Fever.
I'm not bothered. You also don't need a mod to make it into light sniper rifle. You only need to use weapon mods to upgrade it into that build to be a sniper rifle. (I'm only bothered with amount of positive modifiers I can attach to M14 when compared to other weapons. It is just unrealistic.)

its a *battle rifle*, not an assault rifle. And its used today as a DMR solely because it fires 7.62x51. Otherwise there's nothing special bout it as a DMR - which is just putting a scope on the gun. DMR's are not 'sniper' rifles, they're rifles for your fireteams designated DMR.
Most people do not know the existance of DMR weapon class. Not knowing what it is, how it exists (in USA), what it means to the people, what the purpose is, why it exists, why it should exist, everything.
The information you can obtain in 5-10 minutes google is not enough to understand the topic from a weaponry perspective.
I have addressed the issue in two mods:
BCE Guns:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3038472406&searchtext=bce+guns
BCE Guns Crafting System (for BCE):
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3029516593
These include the DMR style weapons:
M14 DMR
C7CT (556 DMR variant of the M16 rifle)
M110
SVDM
AUG9mm
Steyr AUG 556
Sure this is a very broad definition of DMR weapons and both AUG variants are still rather assault rifles but behave ingame like DMRs. The M110 is something between a DMR and a sniper rifle. SVDM is not really a DMR but behaves similarily.
The BCE Guns can be played standalone to make the M14 a new weapon in DMR style and have the original M14 slot be filled with the lesser rifle (M1A, still upgraded from original M14).
You can play this weapon overhaul without BCE Crafting Engine (not including M110 and AUG9mm) or with BCE Guns Crafting System adding even more guns and melee weapons.
Thats what I could come up with to have at least some fix for the topic. Hope it can do the trick for some.
