Refugee Camp (Spoilers!)

I got the Biff call while taking my time in the south, clearing and doing side missions around Fleatown and Port Macao. When I got the call I went up the river and intercepted the attacking force which apparently bought me some time, so then I went and cleared Pantagruel before meeting Biff. Never set foot in the refugee camp.

When I finally went there, well, everyone was dead, including NPCs I'd met before. Now,, I'm assuming this is all part of the big campaign plot twist and is meant to happen, but it feels like this was an important sector and I missed a lot. So did I miss a lot of major events, goodies, or side content by showing up too late? And, was it possible to save anyone?

But you always get the Major's call to Biff first, right? I think it's 4 mines, because I am way past 30 days since I got my first mine and still fine.

Then the refugee camp meet triggers after A8 battle.

And that's when you need to go there right away?

I'm really shocked to learn you can stop the attack on the camp. Is that really the case?

The fight is one of the possible triggers. One is time. If you intercept the attacking group going for A8, but then don't help Bliff for a while and do other stuff, the refugee camp trap will trigger anyway depending on how much time passed since you started the campaign.

I ignored going to the camp but then the event happened "off screen" when I got too close to the Major's camp. Are you sure it's time based too?

The scripted all out assault that happens after that map is an order of magnitude higher than the usual gaming backstab. Not only that but the individual enemies are significantly harder than the Legion. It creates a massive difficulty spike out of nowhere.

I got the "Saw it coming" achievement, for being betrayed by Corazon. The weird thing is, only 0.1% of players have gotten it. Does that mean it's possible to NOT be betrayed by Corazon? I'm so curious now about how many branching/alternate outcomes the game has...

Got this achievement as welll, nice to be in the 0.1% club

Yes, because I never came close to the Majors camp and it still triggered.

How to save the camp? Stay there until the scripted event happened? The event just triggered after I saved biff without getting any mines yet.

At some point I'm going to park my main Squad in the camp and trigger the event

I went to A8 on May 17, that triggered the phone call. At the time I had 2 mines. Saved Biff. Got a call from Corazon to meet at the camp. Went there right away.

Upon entry everyone was dead. Got a message that "porn guy" Pepe is dead (i fixed his satbox, so maybe there was another quest I missed). Shaman was dead too.

Everything was like in my first game when I went there in July.

Yeah i don't know how people supposedly saved them

On another note, stopping the attack the major sends them (not on A8 but in another grid) seems to pause the attack on the camp forever until you get close to the Major's camp - at least that is how my current playthrough is going

I don't think you can save the camp. You can however get some of the people to safety before the war-crime is committed.

If you go through the canyon or through the caverns to the major the event will trigger. You cannot get to the major without triggering the event.

what president? I never met the president. I took three mines, got gifted the 4th by the communists, saved Biff - after that, it was clear Corazon was working on her own, but nothing indicated she's "the traitor" and that she'll try to kill me - got the call from Corazon to meet her at the camp, went to camp, killed everyone, got attacked by 15 armies for no reason, reloaded the earlier save. Very bad experience.
