Yeah, it's absolutely possible to defend the sector, but I'm wondering if the quest then stays available or if it's scripted to end at that date.
There's of course a lot of opportunities to find additional artifacts later down the line, but by then it's a different matter how much benefit there is in carrying them all back to Port Cacao. To be fair, it's not a huge loss to have that opportunity end.

I killed a guy named Graaf. Thought he might be unique but the ONLY option was to attack. Crap. Do i need to load an earlier save? lol
What's the deal with Graaf? Do I need him for something?
He's referred to by name in some dialogues, but you mostly need him dead so you did good I'd think.
