The overworld map was a bit smaller or simpler, as I recall. But maybe I am just more familiar with it.
At least Elliot is still around. Not saying/spoiling more, but it's a fun little encounter.
JA2: 16x16 sectors minus 56 unaccesiibe sectors = 200 sectors
JA3: 12x20 sectors minus 85 unaccessible sectors = 155 sectors
Sector size of JA2 is significantly larger than that of JA3. If you include the arsenal of weapons and content, JA3 is about 50% the size of JA2.
The easiest to perceive this is on the A.I.M. website. Each JA3 merc has about the same weapon as everyone else, while for JA2, there was tons of different weapons, gear and ammo.
The JA2 IMP Merc had the same level of voice acting as any of the AIM Mercs, while in JA3, youve got a near-voiceless IMP Merc that lacks any of the unique Traits the AIMs come with.
I hope that the Modding Tools eventually make JA3 a great game. Right now its only average compared to JA2, minus the graphics.
How eve in JA 2 75% of the Tiles were absolutly useless. You wouldnt find anything there, you wouldnt do anything there, and they were only Copy Paste Tiles of its Neighbouring Tile.
The Game Litterally took place on maybe 1/6 of the Map, namely City/Locations and 1,2,3 secrets/special Tiles, which contained stuff like a Secret Prison or such.
Here each Map is Handbuild, you are able to find something on each map, no matter if its just stuff, a small little detail about the World or other Stuff thanks to Intel and Interactions. Way More Charakter and even Wildlife is "on the Streets" in the World and you find new Stuff to Interact.
And over 150 sectors is more than plenty. With some simple math how much time you can spend in a sector if there is combat, you see the world is quite big.
So at end even when removing a lot of JA2 empty spaces it should be with a quite bigger total area.
But the JA IP was clearly in a too bad state to allow a budget big enough to sustains the same superficie.
For the mercs not having great equipment to steal, it looks more like a JA3 design choice to not let hire a merc just to buy some equipment, right or wrong, it's also a design choice totally similar to not offer any shop with a ton of stuff to buy.
But it doesn't make JA3 less a great game that isn't just a clone of some now seriously old game.
