1st Blind playthrough hearing you need all the freebies merc in this game asap
i haul my ass saving him
i only know later by reading guide to recruit him but boy my attemp to recruit him is flawed from the start
i pull luigi out of prison and go to the church asap because i found intel pastor hiding him there
smartass think great now i can resolve both in one go, trigger the church fight
went into mansion and hooo boy the fight was absolute horror trying to keep smiley alive
he loves to go down bunkering in explosive car nearby, luigi boss and phantom make the fight horrible too
moneywise i have around 200k not saving biff yet, and its all half gone splurged to rent 5 days merc to make my life easier

10/10 would not do the fight this way again, it was good experience though

It makes for a real fun ♥♥♥♥ show if you bring some machine guns to the fight and set up prior to starting, the chaos is beautiful

true, but for some reason all stray bullet will magnetize to the nearest vehicle
i got my 1000 damage achievement this way, 8++ smiley died in explosion
on one occasion smiley decided it was good idea to run into my proximity tnt, or run far from me all bleeding

For me he is, he's solo recruiting militia to hold the choke point at the end area for my main playthrough while i go around doing all the side quests that i haven't done, with my 3 groups of mercs

Smiley gave me the impression he was an absolute tart, so I decided against helping him. In fact, I remember that in JA2 most M.E.R.C.s were absolute tarts as-well, so I'm not going out of my way to help them in JA3 either. The game needs to provide an option to slap the guy...
This made me remember once in JA2 I got tired of Biff, so I sent him off to die to a squad of enemies. Sent some flowers via the AIM's Mortuary services afterwards.

smiley is the best... for being useless. joke aside once my money start to tighten hes best hauler scouter i ever have, and with that dex larry could train him whenever both are lazying around

There is little effort actually if you know what you are doing. You can completely avoid questing by shotgunning/exploding the church door and remove every Booboo's guard by freeing Luigi through the back entrance and then "assisting" Boss with C4 and shots in the back of the head

You don't. I ended the game with 2 squads of mercs and 1.5M in the bank.
That being said, the Blaubert fight is kinda easy if you don't go to the church for Smiley first as you can then trigger it with a dialogue. So.... just put down remote detonated explosives near the group(s) you won't support. This is the best opportunity to use those.

I heard his stats are terrible. While being "free" still makes him a good addition, I'm definitely not putting him in my main squad.

If you know what you're doing, you don't get him. At least in my book. He is a terrible person and a terrible mercenary at that. Farting in his general direction to have him join wouldn't be worth the effort. My first comment still stands.
