Best weapons and setups
There are stats and descriptions for each weapon in the game, but let's talk here about your personal experience.

Say, I could not get much value out of SMGs yet. It sucks at long range and at close range it is less powerful than a shotgun.

Is Dragunov the best sniper for early to mid-game? Text description doesn't give it much praise but in the fights it is decimating and versatile with single shots and bursts. I use enhancements for aim and range in my build.

In assault category FAL performed much better for me than AK47 with similar enhancements

Winchester is amazing. I use it with range and aim enhancements and it is pretty much an OP sniper now.

Among the shotguns double barrel had the best performance for me personally. I used range enhancement and now it blasts to a range of an assault rifle with damage of a shotgun! I didn't like other shotguns though. That shotty with 5 shots is crap I think and the one with 6 shots is for very close range. I use it with Fox when she fails sneak kills.

Keen to hear your thoughts and stories!

or it just the intended JA experience?

It's almost certainly a bug, but it also gives you the Jackie Chan experience 😁

The only Winchester I have found is on Flay and I found him late after finding tons of M24s and Dragunovs. I don't think it is better than either except for the fact that it uses .44. I go back and forth between the M24 and the Dragunov. I think the Dragunov is better for most mercs. First, you can buy 60 7.62 WP HP a day for $300. So that's gonna feed like of these forever. Second, the 3 shot burst. For lower AP/Marksmanship mercs that is a real powerful alternative to headshots. Also the M24 has the cumbersome trait...but that is really not that big of a deal if you are in a good spot.

I have not been able to make SMG's work. The AK47-SU is pretty nice but it does not have as many mod slots as the FAL which has a longer base range. Also bipods are so good that they are almost always going to be better than any gun that can't mount one.

HK21 is insanely good. I have only found one, random drop, and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I gave mine to Ivan and he hit 11 dudes on an overwatch once, killing 5 of them. For direct fire it only costs 4 AP to shoot and he gets 3 AP back per kill...

I have not had much luck with shotguns though the AA12 I got from killing Jackhammer is the sickest close quarters weapon I have found. 12 gauge sabot ammo seems common and a high AP character can do 2 bursts a turn with it.

FAL is the best automatic rifle I have found. AK-74 is close but it loses due to mods.

Lastly pistols. I have a couple of Anacondas with Fox (she has the dual wield perk) modded with long range barrels and UV sights. It's a fun set up though I don't think its better than an FAL.

@Tomy: Did you tried the Desert Eagle pistol? Find it made me thought, wait where are upgraded pistols and SMG?
M4 with grenade launched, you can wipe out 3 guys or 5 hyenas in a single click.

2 MGLs with HE grenades, 2 mortars, 2 RPGs and wipe out all map with all buildings on it :D

Yes I found a few Desert Eagles, but I haven't actually used them. I think you can mod them to use .50 ammo which increase the base damage to 40, although the Desert Eagle is lacking the mod for decreasing AP cost, which puts it based on range and AP cost in the same league as Assault Rifles. It might still be okay as a backup weapon for close range attacks. The main benefit is probably that it allows you to equip a grenade in your second hand.

Winchester is good, M24 is good, and Artillery is good. I have an artillery team with just mortars/grenade launchers I take into heavier fights, otherwise are training militia.

Melee is probably the best/my favorite though. They basically get infinite amounts of attacks per turn and can also move very far with some of the free turn perks (free turn after grenade, melee).

Blood has been single handedly wiping entire bases in 1-3 turns, just did an encounter with 28 enemies and blood killed around 20 of them just running around knifing everyone.

It is 4AP for 40 damages, I didn't noticed AR was similar, ok I get AR has a mod to reduce AP to 4 but still. Well I suppose I could as well try. :-)

FN FAL can be modded to have 4x15 for 4 AP ... thats technically 50% more damage for the same AP with similar range and accuracy.

Except burst is far to work like that. On start you need have bullets totally ignoring armor or the 4x15 is totally false, secondly you need ensure all bullets hits and it's rather more difficult than for single bullet shoot.

It's more you was as lazy that I am, gave up on pistols as there's no upgrade a long time, and give up reconsider. :-)

It's my favorite so far, can be modded for 3 ap shots with decent range... Quite insane with the free move perk

I prefer to use Dragunov while finding G36 guns. Dragunov is available for purchase at C5 with thermal scope(save you on using a chip to get a good scope), heavy stock and compensator. I prefer thermal scope than any scope because if you have a high accuracy merc, you can hit enemies outside your merc's sight and outside the range of the gun. Dragunov also is easy to reload, you can buy armor piercing bullets for it at C5 and in Fleatown they sell hollow points. What I do is I just leave a merc on both location just buying ammo and guns and just send them to my main team to restock their ammo when needed and bring the guns when I have enough on the inventory. Only thing I do not like with Dragunov is it requires 7 AP to shoot.

That is why mid to end game, when I get G36, I replace the Dragunovs with them. Fully upgraded G36 has the same range with the addition of tactical device, grenade launcher and an auto fire mode. To top all that, single shot starts at 4 AP and burst at 5 AP. So if you have a merc with a high stealth kill and Agi, you could shoot 2 shots fully magnified and kill 2 enemies even out of sight.

Also I make sure I have an AK-74 in the teams inventory. If you load it with amour piercing bullets its penetration rating will be Super-Heavy, I usually use it against heavily armored boss and to one shot crocs.

Lastly, when I need the services of a machine gun, my go to is RPK-74, range wise it is not the best in the game but it has 6 possible mods and most importantly it uses 7.62 mm WP ammo which is the same as the one used by Dragunov. Which means you do not need to worry about raining those bullets at your enemies because you have a steady supply (just need to remember to buy the bullets regularly from the two locations).

Here is my main team setup on MI difficulty.

IMP is a melee specialist with both melee traits and "The Thing" machete and a heavy damage rifle (FN-Fal or AK-74) as a secondary weapon. Melee is pretty busted RN and this sole characher is extremely mobile and kills 5 enemies per turn (6 with attack of opportunity). Built with agility and strenght traitlines.

Barry is my shotgun expert, AA-12 as main weapon and Uzi+Barry's grenades offhands. Big mobility, about 4 kills per turn. Strenght and agility traitlines aswell.

Mouse is my stealth kills specialist. Carries a MP5 as main weapon and big stealth bonuses. OHKO any (non boss) type of enemy, even the ones with the reflex perk (stealth kill overrides the reflex). Any weapon with correct aim and bonus to steath kills would do but 9mm rounds are the cheapest so mp5 is my choice. Carries a sniper rifle as a secondary weapon. Built with dex and agility traitlines. Kills 2 enemy per turn.

Reast of my team (MD, Livewire and Kalyna) use the same build which is infantry troopers. Carries high crit rifles (PSG1 or winchester and galil or AR15). Adapts to most situations, deal big damage with high range and good mobility. Between 1 and 2 kills per round. Dex and agi traitlines.

I do not use any cumbersome weapon because I find mobility to be extremely important and the extra power from high tier cumbersome weapons (HK1 and M82) does not justify the loss of free movement.

I also do not use any MG build because it's extremely ammo inefficient and not very fun to play. Yes 1 machinegunner can solve a fight just by himself shooting a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of ammo but I much prefer solving fights with active gaming.

I have no 7.62 AP ammo at C5, only 5.56 match.

Is there a trick?
