Don't underestimate this useful piece of equipment, it only takes 1AP to fire (using 1 single merc's turn you can fire many flares and illuminate a huge area), has a huge range and illuminates quite a large area; really great for illuminating a machine gun's cone of fire for overwatches especially or in any case where you want to eliminate the 'in the dark' aiming penalty and you might not have thermal scope aimed 3x aimed shot on a weapon. You can also craft ammo for it from hand-thrown flares. I give the flare gun to MD who tends to stay in the back ready to heal people and is kind of a support sniper as his secondary gun, if he doesn't have any shot to take on a particular turn he can help out someone else's aim a bit with this. Just thought I'd mention it since sometimes I forget to use it : )

I just use night vision googles. I got like 5 of them.

i'd rather protect my mercenaries' heads :D, giving up head armor completely when there are thermal scopes doesn't seem worth it at all; maybe for snipers far away etc. but then there are situations in the game where you are forced to fight in uncomfortable places with enemies near you because of scripted stuff etc. i do have 1-2 night vision goggles in inventory but find myself not really using them because when there are situations when someone is taking a far away shot out of stealth or something they can just use the AP For the thermal scope without a problem
