Yeah, it's awful. They did the same ridiculous stuff with Wasteland 2 to please some backers which resulted in cloth visuals only as well. I wouldn't mind this as an option for those people who fancy going into battle with pyjamas - but come on, a merc game without visible combat gear? What's next? NPCs faking weapons with their fingers and shouting "pew! pew!"?
But realistically, they could have let you turn it on/off in settings.
I want some of the mercs put on something makes them look like a actual soldier rather than a Youtuber or something, but its better than clone outfits.
Couple of days ago I watched a bunch of JA related Y-tube vids, and one of them went over the various games in the franchise. I pretty much skipped everything after JA2 cause they were kinda bad, so didn't really know much about them. As I was watching the vid, I noted that at least one game did have visible gear feature, and everyone in it looked like a generic green army man. Impossible to tell who was who by sight. That did indeed look kinda boring and bland.
The individual merc personalities are a big part of the whole JA thing, and I think the individual clothing choices does indeed enhance that. And the game is supposed to be a portrayal of classic action flicks, and not a simulation of spec op teams, so the individual costumes make sense in that regard too.
Some of the clothing choices are kinda odd in my eye, and some I think don't really fit the characters. Most do though, and I do appreciate that individuality. Though at times I do wish that the armor and helmets did appear on the character models. Like I said, am still on the fence about it. I can see the advantages and the disadvantages of both approach.
Really wish there was some compromise between the two. That did show the gear in some fashion, but also managed to retain the personal styles of the mercs. But I suppose that was just not economic thing for the devs to pursue. It would've required custom models for every gear on every character. Too much work for a small studio to implement.
As a side note, gas masks do show on the character model for some odd reason. It's the only bit of gear I've found that does. Maybe it's a leftover from the earlier build. Back from when they were still fiddling with having visible gear.
So to save time and money on development they decided it was better
to spend their manpower on other areas of development that needed their attention.
Maybe one day Modders can make this happen but it sounds like it would take a lot of work.
Yeah i also like it this way, They are easy to distinguish with one look
