Max Merc limit?

I am using the mod that allows me to hire many mercs. I have it set to 30, but after 27 it says I can't hire any more, I have too many. So my question is, is there a maximum limit on the total number of mercs? ( have one IMP and the rest are AIM hires. Or is there a limit on total salary maximum? I am just trying to learn the mechanics for future play throughs. One my squads really needs a medic, lol.

So there must be a cap on the AIM mercs. I can add IMP mercs at will (using the Unlimited Mercs mod).

default 15 x aim with custom settings mod up to 100

Strange, I raised my total merc cap from 30, to 40, to 50, and I can't seem to get my total merc count up past 30 (I tried mixing AIM and IMPs), but 30 is more than enough, lol.
