What really is the point of mishap chance?
I don't really understand why a mercenary game requires explosive skill to throw grenades.

If you're a mercenary in JA3, you are not just some random civilian -- you have the skills to throw a grenade.

So why is Blood (a throwing expert...) throwing a flashbang that lands at his feet and suppresses himself?

I can understand mishap chance that results in inaccurate trajectories, although that seems more like a strength or dexterity issue than an explosives skill issue.

I don't understand the concept of trained mercenaries being unable to throw grenades.

Same, I still can't process why EXP is so important when throwing grenades.

Pull the pin, throw the thing

Everyone who watched some 1980s action movies also knows how to turn a shoelace and a handgrenade into a boobie trap.

If anything it should be the DEX to hit and STR for the throwing range.

Also, gief back pebbles for distraction

i think the high EXP required to use grenades decently is my big issue right now with this game. should not be insanely dangerous to give grenades to like 90% of your mercs

its ok for some characters to be barred from explosives. especially those m.e.r.c. types

Being a vet, you would be surprise how often someone pulls the pin, drops the grenade and throws the pin.

There's dozens of videos on Youtube from military training where a recruit throws the pin and drops the grenade.

during my army days, i threw 3 grenades and few dozen practice ones for training
and throwing grenades precisely where you want is harder than you think
and in combat situation, i assume it would be more difficult to do that

but yeah, as a game mechanic, i dont understand why this mishap even exist
and why the EXP affect this? it should've been DEX that affect mishap chance

In this thread i see people that put zero into explosive skill on their I.M.P. The game is a simulation that stays very close to it's predecessors, and that is awesome.

There is a throwing perk for, uh, throwing distance.. Explosives is for handling the boom boom stuff.

then this thread about why mishap exist / why EXP affects mishap is not relate to
'The game is a simulation that stays very close to it's predecessor' ? i'm confused

You could throw anything at any time so i think the algorithm was more generic. Some stuff made more sense, breaklights throwing knives etc but iirc explosives skill did give a bonus to accuracy forgrenades

In JA2, low explosive skill does not cause you to throw your grenade at yourself or your allies like in JA3.

One great example is Sidney, who in JA2 was a throwing expert. He was a good grenadier despite 14 explosives skill because explosives skill wasn't relevant.

In JA3, Sidney cannot reliably throw grenades because for some reason this legendary merc who was previously an expert thrower is no longer able to even throw a grenade well due to his 14 explosives.

Doesn't make sense. Let mercs do merc stuff and throw grenades.

The EXP skill was relevant for not just throwing grenades in JA2 but also if you could use a grenade launcher. It didn't happen often but I have had a grenade blow up in my face in JA2 when throwing a grenade. It is the main reason I always took Barry.
suejak Aug 6, 2023 @ 8:00pm
No, you are making stuff up. It did not affect throwing in JA2. There was a chance you could throw the grenade and it wouldn't explode if your explosives was 0. You would never have a grenade blow up in your face due to low explosives skill.
