Single shot for overwatch
I’m early on in the game and I find that my mercs miss a lot of overwatch shots and burn through ammo. Is there an option for single shot OW that I’m missing?

Make smaller overwatch cones and overwatch more intelligently, e.g. chokes and closer range.
Thanks for the suggestions and the inference that I’m not playing intelligently. I take them to mean you are answering my question that there is no single shot option with a burst gun.
Overwatch will always use burst if its available.

Ok but if you miss so much your overwatch there's a reason, and typical is too long range for your weapon+merc, second typical is let cone cross covers that could trigger the shoot when moving enemy is a bit masked by some obstacles whch lower a lot chance to hit.
If they're missing, there's a reason for it. Early MG is a little bit of a nugget trap as you probably can't reliably feed it and it will burn ammo on poor shots.

Don't extend the overwatch cone an incredible distance out, especially at night and poor conditions. Shoot as much 9mm on overwatch as you want, but I tend to fight it outclassed. Set up fields of fire that are likely to hit and you need to control. The Ai takes a large penalty from running through overwatch-- you can exploit this to some degree by considering where you place overwatch.
Hard to understand why the fire mode isn't a permanent toggle.

Isn't best range is bellow half range? it means range choose is easily too long, it's a bit counter intuitive but the game gives a visual hint for that, but not for overwatch, only when aiming.

But yes, conditions as night, rain, fog, matter seriously too.

What do you mean, small overwatch cone? Is this a thing? Or do you just mean how rifles have narrow cones, and automatics are wider?

Smaller in range. Closer is better chance to hit, past half range you start lost hit chance.

Range yes but not the width... Or, I guess you mean less range means closer enemies therefore better odds of getting a good shot?

Wide cones are good; the point is not to overextend so your character is taking unaimed OW shots across the map or shooting into environmental objects. Overwatch can be devastating if controlled at closer ranges but it can backfire if you don't do it well (e.g. too short or too specific may mean you don't get any attacks or don't get enough).

Exactly. The closer the enemy is, the bigger they are in your sight. There are two parts to targetting: air and target. If you hit air, nothing happens. The more target you see the less air you will hit and so have a greater chance of not missing.

The cone width simply represents the field of vision the merc has while aiming down the gunsight (and presumably how far they can turn or pivot without using up an Action Point). Long sights will cause the cone to narrow. The cone width will change depending on the weapon being used and the ability of the merc (Omryn comes to mind).
