I also would assume you can place proxy or remote explosive in sector entrances during the post-Refugee Camp event, but I never tried that because I had enough shaped charges to evaporate the battalion worth of troops.
PETN on the other hand is not used for any such crafting. I just came out of Landsbach after remote-bombing 3 of the guards, so yeah, they are useful. Time-detonated PETN (or C4 if you really need it) can also be useful to punch holes into buildings like those at the Good Place.
mortars are also so funny, most of the time I hit nothing, guess I have to blast 2 at once.
on the other hand those 40mm grenade launchers kill everything, hardly ever miss, especially when I run 2-3 mercs with them.
But yes mortars are also limited in terms of usability. You can use it to force enemies out of their defense positions but not much more.
You have the C4, the remote detonator and the remote. You have to combine the C4 with the remote detonator. You then equip the C4 and throw it like a grenade.
Afterwards the merc with the remote in the inventory can trigger the C4.
