Haven't tried it with melee attacks yet. But it works with guns.
I tried shooting it, but I couldn't get the character to take a shot using free aim.
Usually you just press "F" and then aim at a square behind the window.
Previously I moved directly adjacent to a window and tried a melee and a free aim. The free aim wouldn't fire for some reason.
Maybe it wasn't really a window? It was the shutter type, but I believe it looked just like the other window that an enemy smashed when moving through it.
If you mean you want the merc to go through a window to enter a building rather than having to use doors/holes to get in, they won't do this while in stealth since breaking a window could alert an enemy unit. To break a window:
- Get your merc next to the window
- You should then be able to click the window to get them to break it with their arm/elbow.
- Then you can enter the building via that window.
Keep in mind though, this will create noise any nearby enemies will hear it. Also, make sure the area on the other side of the window is free or you'll end up breaking a window and still not be able to get in.
So while in stealth, they won't break a window.
How break a window:
- Get next to the window you want to break
- Exit stealth mode with that merc
- click the opposite side of the window, rather than enter the building, the merc will smash the window. Keep in mind this creates noise, so you may be detected.
- Re-enter stealth mode.
You can now enter via the window, or shoot through it.
I note you said your merc moves through the window, but mine (Wolf) did not enter the building, he remained outside, and I had to click again to get him to enter.
I did this yesterday in Ernie village, seems to work fine. It's not really that different to how it works in Xcom 2 where it marks a path and shows points where the path requires smashing doors/windows and will alert the enemy.
Selecting a path to simply go in the building they don't break the window, they end up going to a door. If they are automatically smashing and entering, you're not in stealth. At least that's how it worked when I did it.
It's not because I need to do stealth, sure, I could just sit back and shoot them, done that plenty of times already, but I wanted to try and do it without ever getting spotted or raising an alarm, and it worked. Killed every enemy in the sector using Wolf and a knife.
At Landsbach’s nightclub there’s a room with a locked door which can’t be picked, but there’re some windows.
Sometimes you can just click inside the room and mercs will break the window and get in themselves. That doesn’t work with this room, nothing happens.
I shot at the windows, nothing happened.
I planted explosives at the windows, no luck.
Lastly, I threw a grenade at the window. It broke through the window and went inside! WTF.
