What are the connectors for?

so stuff goes from one building to other right away what i understand

They connect things that normally would have to be beside each other for bonuses. Like a food crate being next to the kitchen will give a 20% bonus to production.

cant figure out how to use them. If you need an empty space to place the connectors, then why not just place the crates together instead of wasting space on connectors?

I found them to be cumbersome and take up useful space. After a day of forcing myself to use them, I stopped and never looked at them again. Instead, I chose proper planning.
