well it's not in any shops and not in the dungeon.
you meant the one you have to do at the start right.

So you go through the initial dungeon. Then when you exit, instead of descending down to the camp and eventually the town, you instead ascend up to another part of the dungeon. There is a very tough fight in the final room, then to deactivate the magical bursts in the room you have to go to the device against the wall. That's when you get the gem. [spoiler/]

the top with the light? that the baron in town asks you to do?, did that, in the fight I attacked the thing and destroyed it, only way I could win the fight.

Ahh. I managed to win the fight without destroying it (by luck) I had 1 of my guys start attacking it, but before he could destroy it my other guys managed to finish off the other enemies and the fight ended. I dunno then. There is a large diamond out there somewhere (cant remember where) you could try that and see if it works

I've remembered where I found the large diamond (kind of) There is a monster type in the game that looks like a small stone elemental. There is also one unique one that is considerably larger. He drops the diamond. I can't remember where I met it though beyond it being in the countryside somewhere.

Fought them, did not drop it, not sure that one will respawn

I also found a large ruby and a large emerald, but no idea where. So I'm afraid I'm out of suggestions. Besides it's possible the Magic Gem from the tower is the only one that gives the top reward.

the answer is radiant sapphire found at top. don't break the ancient machine and you get it, +awaraness.

What I did was take the diamond to the Oracle first before completing the crypt quest line.

I then ran back to the crypt and he asks you about the diamond and you just tell him you gave it to the oracle. He says it is a shame that he would have liked to send it to his higher ups but as long as it is gone that is probably best. or something along those line.
