How is this quest supposed to end? Text just says "Gordon was very happy and granted us a reward for bringing back Aika" No further instructions. Quest not closed.

You probably need to kill Garrav to fully complete the quest.
If you want to find him, you need to remember the hints that he "can't be found if he doesn't want to be found" and that he is a coward.

I remember that being said, but feel dumb as all I take from that is that as a coward he doesn't want to be found and therefore can't be found...

I don't fully want to give the answer away, because it's one of the most clever logic puzzles added in the last update in my opinion, it felt really good when I figured it out.
So instead, I'll give one more hint.
If he indeed can't be found, then have you considered making him find you?

Sadly I suffer from very poor memory. If there was dialogue in the quest that pointed to something he would have wanted, I have no memory of it now. Beyond guild guy giving the quest, and rescuing the girl, I can’t remember any details of the quest. And talking to either of them isn’t offering me anything. Nor anything in the journal. All things point to Aika, but like I said, talking to her offers nothing.

OK re-going over stuff, I realise I missed the map. And therefore realise I've never visited the upper forest. However even using the map, I still cant find either of the 2 entrances it seems to point to. Its all just unscalable cliff face to me. I must be missing something still

The camp where you find Aika is in the upper part of the forest though?
How did you rescue her if you didn't get up there yet?

Well the map thing seems to point to an enclosed area right to the North East of the Town. I cant remember where I rescued the girl from, buit it wasn't there as that area is still blacked out. It's not a particularly big area, but it's definitely where the little map points to.

I can see which area you mean, but no, the map points at the two entrances upwards towards the entire large North East area.
That's the upper forest, which is guarded by Yaksa.

Ahh, well. Wasted some time searching that spot then. And makes me feel even further from a solution

Alright, I can give you the solution.
Although I would still recommend that you don't reveal the spoiler unless you are really stuck on it.

If you sleep at the camp, you can get Garrav to ambush you. The coward will only fight you if he can have the upper hand

OK so tried camping several times there now. Should I declare it bugged at this point?

Where did you camp?
And what happened? Did other enemies spawn or did nobody spawn?

At the place with the cage. Nothing spawned. Tried camping without hunting, with hunting, waiting till dawn, waiting till dusk, waiting 1 hour. All result in nothing

Maybe he only spawns if you don't have full health?
I only did it once so I don't know the exact way to do it
