Why do his friends call him Spuder?
Is it some kind of spider injoke? Or is it because he looks like a potato on legs?

It's a joke originally made by the composer of the song, Tristan Alric. Eventually, the joke spread to the community so practically everyone (including myself) familiar with the game just calls him spuder :)

There's not really any other reasons: it just started out of Tristan's funsies to name the song that way.
