Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling

Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling

Paper Mario left me sad and disappointed.
Never knew this game existed until today since Steams algorithm is garbage. Nice to find a real Paper Mario game since Nintendo doesn't care anymore. The Origami King is so boring to play. I don't want to do a crappy puzzles every single fight and get no levels or anything in return expect money.

I would have been fine with TOK if it had a story I could actually enjoy. Instead it only hints at such a story and then withholds it. On the surface it has a story, but in the end it is only paper thin instead of the complex multilayered stories we had in the past.
*sigh* Remember when Paper Mario used to be an RPG? I don't, because I never played them during their initial releases (I only had a PS2 back then) but funnily enough, my first exposure to Paper Mario was Super Paper Mario on the Wii, didn't like it, tried Sticker Star on the 3DS and saw how much it failed as a game in almost every way. Because of these two games, I almost never even tried the N64 or GCN games - in fact, I was hesitant to buy Paper Mario 64 on the Virtual Console, but I'm glad I did.

I played through it start to finish and enjoyed almost every moment of it. Last year, I got The Thousand Year Door on the GameCube and was genuinely surprised when I played it on my Wii - it was one of the best gaming experiences I ever had. Each chapter felt very different from the last, character dialogue and development was top notch with the right balance of light-hearted humour and dark, serious moments along with a genuinely thrilling and exciting climax.

I mentioned earlier how Sticker Star and Colour Splash felt like bootleg versions of games that already existed, but when I look at The Origami King in trailers, online gameplay footage or whatever, I see a game that feels like it has no idea what it's trying to be. It tries to be an adventure game but the battles are all turn based like an RPG. It tries to be an RPG but the battles have no purpose since you still don't get exp or level up like a proper RPG.

All this is coming from someone that has absolutely no nostalgia for these games whatsoever. As much as I enjoyed Bug Fables, while better than the other Paper Mario games, it still doesn't top Thousand Year Door for me.

I actually personally like Super Paper Mario, but not so much for the gameplay, but for the very good story. The Origami King doesn't even have that much IMO. Bad game play, story mostly based on "everything is made of paper and we are going to remind you of that fact with every other sentence". Everything that they tried to put in the game as a concession to the fans was done in a very half hearted way with the exception of the overworld. It's actually pretty nice and well connected. The partners aren't partners, they are there for mostly bad paper puns. You can't control them in battle, and they fail their attacks 90% of the time they get a chance. The remaining 90% of the time you one shot ever monster you come across. There is just so much wrong with it, and I regret having played it honestly.

I won't be giving them a cent until they make either TTYD HD, or a game in that vein. Heck, even Super Paper Mario for all of its flaws felt like it was in the same series as the first two. Stinker Star, Color Trash, and King of Disappointment are just wearing the name of a once great series.
The games are getting really glowing reviews which baffles me. I can only surmise that most of the nostalgic players have abandoned the franchise leaving new comers to find joy in what it is without the glasses of nostalgia. It appears players like NBOX21 are currently the exception or, at the very least, are not leaving an impact on reviews. I hope Paper Mario won't continue to be a soulless mass production of gimmicky commercial success, but if they only care about the numbers there is probably little reason for them to do anything at the moment.

On a more positive note, I'm adoring the Bug Fables journey! The difficulty is in the right spot with so many great things pulled from the early games be it the chef, the quests, to reading enemies (I'm so grateful all of the characters can do this). They seem to have a handle of what made the original games solid both story-wise and mechanic-wise and built upon it. I look forward to dancing between this game and FFXIV to get my good story fix, haha.

I'm thinking that is the main reason most reviewers are giving TOK such high praise. Also, I've noticed tons of attacks on people who are fans of the originals. One guy "RGT85" going so far as to call original fans "cultists". I lost a lot of respect for him in that video.

SuperMarioT gave the game a positive review, but he like many older fans pointed out the many flaws, yet still said "yeah, it is pretty good". He kept bringing up "this is just my honest opinion". It felt more like he was trying to justify that to himself rather than the audience. Arlo hasn't gotten a full review, but said he was enjoying things so far. Those two are probably the most famous I know of who speak out against the current Paper Mario franchise.

I'm trying to go through my back log, while also playing multiplayer stuff with friends. I'm looking forward to the next big Warframe update as well. It does an interesting story that keeps me coming back, even if it is a bit grindy.

"Nostalgia bias"? I've been hearing that quite a ton, with people saying stuff like "people only liked the old ones and hate the new ones because of nostalgia" without any good reasoning for that. My experience with Paper Mario is exactly why the "nostalgia" arguments just don't work - I played the later ones first which I didn't like and then played the older ones which I absolutely enjoyed.

Also, I played so many games from my childhood that are nowhere near as good as I remember them or don't hold up today, and the first two Paper Mario games, especially The Thousand Year Door, hold up much better than they have any right to and exceeded my personal expectations.

I've only seen one person give an argument that I can respect for them liking the newest game. A video on Youtube called "How I Learned to Love Paper Mario Again" by Garrulous64. I disagree with this person highly, and have plenty of counterpoints to what was said. Garrulous64 does seem to agree that the series would be much better if they just removed the creative restrictions that Kensuke Tanabe mentions, and that are likely enforced by Shigeru Miyamoto.

Even on that channels comments section a person flat out told me they didn't believe me when I said I had tried the game, and found it to be incredibly disappointing even when going in with the knowledge it was different than TTYD.
