Also, how do you know you're not a fan of something if you've never played it? If you hated the mere idea of Paper Mario so much, then you're probably not going to like this considering that it plays similarly to the older (and better) ones.
"Not a Paper Mario fan at all". This combined with your expressed frustration at all the reviews making the fair comparison to Paper Mario implies disdain; words have meaning and inherent implications, mate.
Regardless, if you like simple turn-based RPGs, then you might like this. If not, then Steam has the "no questions asked" refund within a decent time window.
It's just that it's harder for me to convince people that the game is THIS good because I basically have to explain why I loved pm and why this game does it so well, but I will try:
It has a very simplistic style that's easy to get into, but says a lot when you dig deep into it. This game is no exception like it has a simple cute artstyle, simple ost which I love and the amount of content you get out of its price could be qualified as stealing tbh. It's worth WAY WAY more than its price. The mechanics are also p engaging for a turn based rpg mainly because of the action commands, but also because this game has a decent (not perfect) balance that incentivise you to think a lot when making your moves. It even offers a hard mode if you are into this!
And imo, the HIGHLIGHT of this game is the charm: the main cast have just amazing dialogues and the whole game too. There are several scenes that makes me react even after watching them a couple times.
None of these matter if you played pm or not, it's just an incredibly solid RPG. The reason you see a lot of comparison with pm is because if someone has played pm, they already have p good expectations when getting into this game and EVEN WITH THESE, it still manages to blow people's mind.
It's just easier to convince people, but there's no reasons to think that not having played pm will make you dislike this game. if you PLAYED but DID NOT LIKE pm, then I would reconsider, same if you don't like rpg in general (if you aren't a fan of turn based...I would still consider because it's more engaging than your typical one).
Hopefully that answers your question :)
What I mean is, I didn't want it to be a case where it was like:
"hey look gamers, this is like that thing you love isn't that cool!??"
or, "hey isn't this story beat similar to those games you like? Isn't that cool!!??"
or even, "hey look at your paty members and attack animation, don't those remind of that game you love? Isn't that cooooooool?!!
you could see why that would get annoying for a someone like me. "Okay cool we get it" you know? especially when they it very obvious and in your face.
There's DEFINITELY stuff you will recognize if you play pm, but tbf, it's really just a love letter to it and not really its reason to exist. I love pm a lot, but if I had never played pm and I had played this, I would come to the same conclusion (except I would be more impressed because I wouldn't have seen this style before).
The reason people are so enticed to say this and not the other part is because it's easier to convince people who played pm, but also because this game released in an interesting timing where the pm series did very controversial changes (which I personally disagree to most of them). So a lot of people (and tbf, they aren't really wrong of doing this) just say the pm part (that it's the pm game you want to play), but don't necessarily reflect back on WHY you should even consider a pm style game regardless if you played pm.
Also, this game is underknown so yeah.... (you have no idea the amount of people I see that played this game and be like....why tf did I not heard about it before? because it blows their mind).
Only that if you play a PM game after playing BF, it's going to feel more like a step down in most ways, especially the combat and difficulty, but nonetheless it will still be a great experience, the first two at least
Which is by itself a good thing to do (also because ttyd is amazing despite its flaws)
The issue is it's harder to sell the game for people who HAVE NOT played it, but I think it can be done if people adds context to it which is unfortunately not done much :(
