How to use/show ghost for learning/improving?

I just bought the game and started a time trial for the first section only to learn the Isle of Man track step by step. After finishing the first section I tried it again and wanted to race against my ghost but it didn't show up. I know that there is a button on the controller (D-PAD up) to switch ghost on/off but it doesn't work. Can anyone help me please how to properly use ghosts and turn them on/off in this game?

The ghost should show automatically, there does seem to be a problem i see some of the time where the ghost will disappear but that's usually after i have done a lot of laps.

Maybe this only works if you drive a full lap and not only a section of the track. I tried it on a normal (short) track and the ghosts work. But on the long Isle of Man course (I only tried one section and not the whole track) it doesn't work...
