@Doug: Changing the ratios is good advice, thank you. And I agree that there should be practice in career mode. I will take your advice and fiddle w/ the gear ratios a little bit, especially for the hard races.
@Xammond: The "imaginary" wheelspin is one of my main complaints too. If there was noticeable and interpretable feedback from wheelspin, it would be way easier to find the sweet spot. Unfortunately, grip is not really implemented in this game anyway. You only have this short "burnout" animation at the start that seems to be fixed (if it happens). In Milestone games you can slide the rear tyre in braking zones and you can spin it from every corner. There is clear and distinct visual, acoustic and haptic (controller rumble) feedback when it happens.
Anyway, that's not too say I'm not happy w/ that game overall. It's good at what it's aimed at. A great arcade-ish simulation of road racing that offers the greatest sense of speed I witnessed in a game. And despite being arcade-ish, it's really hard.
Therefore you might be right Xammond: the game is probably more fun anyway if you lose that positions at the start.
