Servers shutting down on April 3.
Welp, that's the game folks.

All Ticket to Ride servers will be closing on April 3rd, 2024, at 11am CEST / 2am PDT / 5am EDT, thus online play mode will not be available anymore.

Gonna get all the train fun in I can till then, because I'm not buying the trainwreck (pun intended) that is the new TtR. Crossing my fingers someone more tech savvy than I can figure out a way to enable direct connect play or some other way to keep playing.

I can predict their answer - buy the new version of the game. :/

Every person that uses the Twin Sails version has been left out in the cold. I have sent letters to Twin Sails demanding an explanation why they have failed to maintain their servers and why WE have to suffer because of them. At the same time they are promoting Marmalade's version of Ticket to Ride and from what I hear it sucks even more than Twin Sails. I sense some sort of plan to force us to purchase another online game of what we love to play. And if we do, how long will that last until we are forced to purchase more software. I believe both companies are not telling us the full story and we should consistently contact them to find out what it going on. I will not stay silent about this.

I got this message from Twin Sails.....
Hello,

Thank you for your support over the years
However, maintaining online servers for a long-running game like this requires a significant ongoing investment. Considering the age of the game and the technical challenges involved, it is unfortunately not feasible for us to continue supporting the servers at this time.

Best regards,
Twin Sails Support

And just like that we are screwed.

Steam literally will host the games for free. Use Steamworks.

If you could write a guide on how to do this - or provide a link on how this is done - I am sure that many would be quite grateful!

Sorry that is not what I meant, I meant it to the devs saying it was a cost thing. It is free through steam. I and some of my software engineer friends would be more than happy to try to work on this. I am a game developer that literally thousands of people play my games for free though steamworks. The other option would have been to packet sniff a game and build an emu however I missed the memo it was being ♥♥♥♥ down so now too late.

Darn. I was hoping you had a work around.

Still, I think there might be a market for something like this. I have a few games in my library that are just dead weight because the servers they rely on were shut down. If there was some sort of third-party program that would allow players to get around this and connect directly to each other instead, it would probably sell.

what a pity I wish they had asked for a subscription or something.... I tried a couple of the others without success. When this started (before steam) I used to play while riding an exercise bike... I would only allow myself to play when I was on the bike. regularly riding 1 hour per day. Got in shape then started taekwon do with my boys. Now I am a 4th dan and an instructor. Been teaching 16 years, soon will open my own school. It has been a lot of fun. Sorry it is done. Good luck folks... Just checked on the web site....Ticket to Ride

Very cool, and good luck with the school!

I'd like to point out, though, that the game is still playable - only the online component has been removed. As long as you don't mind playing against only bots the game is still plenty of fun.

Where can I play ticket to ride?
aajham Apr 17, 2024 @ 7:06pm
Thank you.... Yes I understand but I find the robots pretty boring. I was not in the running for best but I have not lost to bots for years.... I really appreciate you pointing it out though. I did try one of the board game sites, at least with the free version it never started a game. All good running your own business will be taking all of my time anyway. Thank you for the good wishes.. be well....

Do not buy the new version. These cretins do not deserve your money.

Since I only wish to play with my friends online this version is effectively useless to me. Luckily I can still play on boardgamearena which is great even though there are only two maps available there at the moment. It is certainly possible to set something like this up where the host is actually running the game, no need for servers which might be turned off in the future. Now I have to ask myself how long I am going to be able to play a game before it is turned off when I think about buying it, or advise someone else to buy it.

I have at least two games in my library that I will never be able to get all the achievements for because of this exact reason. It is a very real concern, especially for multiplayer games, and is something that we, as consumers, should look into before handing over our cash.

Also, have you considered Table Top Simulator? I think there are more TTR maps available in the Workshop, and the game is hosted locally, rather than a third party server.

Steamworks isn't free, Steam is just eating the cost of the servers and bandwidth. This game may have been on Steam, but the developer hosted the servers, not Steam. The company that makes the board game is paying another company to make a new version. Why on earth would they keep paying thousands of dollars a year to run servers for a game they are no longer allowed to sell? They moved the license to Marmalade (new dev).
