Fortunately, those of us who own the game can still play against the computer. For those that want to play against real players but don't want to buy the new version for whatever reason (I'm waiting until they fix all the bugs, add new maps, and a Humble Bundle is released that has all the expansions) there is always Tabletop Simulator. The Steam Workshop has a bunch of mods that allow most of the boards, and more.

I can set up a Team Fortress 2 server based off my laptop, and have done so in order to play with my kids. TF2 was created by Valve, the company behind Steam. So I know it isn't a Steam-related issue - not if Steam allows me to do it with their own games!
The new version is unacceptably bad. I won't be purchasing it.
Seems ridiculous to think that someone hasn't thrown a lifeline to the existing game that has a very large, dedicated following.
I give the 'new' version 3 months before it's gone.
If anyone is to blame, it is either DoW or Asmodee - I would think the latter, really. They should have built in a way for people to play online that didn't require a connection to their servers.
