What is the Mouse symbol?

I am playing (on a Mac, using trackpad and return key) and occasionally I see a large mouse icon (like a 2-button Windows mouse) at the bottom of the screen. I have no idea what it is supposed to mean or do.

And then I used an arrow key and got a keyboard icon. It doesn't seem to impact anything, I keep clicking to move or grab or look, and using return to continue from the text fragments.

You can play Mutazione with a mouse kind of like a point and click adventure, with a keyboard and WASD movement or with a controller. The icons you're seeing are the game just giving you a heads up on what current control scheme you're using.
