Upgrades under threat
Is the R&D part of f1 2020 broken or something? I'm in my 3rd season and earned my first win and first pole this weekend which felt really good. Only 5 races left so no chance to win the championship but i was looking forward to win the championship in my 4th season.

But with only 5 races left they changed some rules for next year and i'm finde with that, cool feature, BUT. The whole aerodynamics tree and the whole chassis tree are now orange which means i lose everything i don't buy again, right? Thats impossible with 5 races left and i worked hard for those upgrades. WTF is this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥? Does that mean i have to start almost from zero again?

If that's the case i will never play the game again. Developing a car 3 long seasons to earn finally a win and the reset everything so that you drive at the back of the field again.

You can update those parts for half the cost of the actual upgrade. If you don't do new upgrades you can update most of the upgrades that got regulated.

That's how it works. The game will choose one or more tech trees randomly and will put every single part into the unsave-state. That can happen anytime from the middle of the season up to the near end of it (even though your engineers send you emails sometimes, if it's a late change)

And you've to preemptively save some R&D, if you know, that it can get expensive, especially if you've researched most of the trees already. I can understand, why someone didn't know about it in the first season, but you should already be familiar with it after 2 seasons.

And no, you don't have to start from zero again, even though you'll propably loose some of it, if you wasted too much R&D points before it. Try to save the big ones first, as the smaller ones can be researched faster again. They don't need to have a path to the middle, so don't care about the order here. Saved researches will also make it possible to research new things, which touch it, so you might also use them as starting points for further research as well.

It's no different to what the FIA do in real life.

Oh you like that extra downforce your front wing generates? Ok you can't use that next year.
That's a very effective braking system you've got there, illegal from next year.
etc...

It is not just you, but every team on the grid facing the same problem. It is intended to force you and other teams to make critical choices in what you keep and what you drop. This means the field gets shaken up a bit every few seasons to stop it becoming a Mercedes 10 year win.

I actually look forward to it as it makes the racing more random, allowing smaller teams to maintain a fast car while the big teams suffer.

Well, you've gotten an email, somewhere around Singapore, that some regulations were going to be changed. So you really should've started saving by then and it's not exactly the games fault you didn't.

Not always, It can be a random change without warning. I had the cut-scene first season at Sochi for an aero reset without any emails. Season 4 I had a full reset and only got warned at Suzuka by email, with the cut-scene the next race.

There won't always be an email. The chances of one is just higher, if the regulation change is hitting the grid later down the calendar.
