The game normally uses 2 windows, one for the first and one for the second driver. The player is normally within the first one, so you'll get overtaken in the pit stop and if you're not good at driving on cold tyres, then you'll most likely loose enough time on your outlap to be overcut by other drivers.
If you feel that being a problem, try to extend your first stint a littlebit and wait, until most cars behind you pittet. Some drivers are better pitting earlier, others when pitting later. You've to find the optimal strategy for your driving style.
And also don't forget that when you keep faster cars behind you, that you've to pit at the same time. If your pits are out of sync, then they'll definitely overtake you, as you've no chance on defending in such a scenario
