Sorry to hear you experiencing issues, could you email your log file, located in 'Documents\I-Novae Studios\Infinity Battlescape\Logs', to contact at inovaestudios.com?

Thx for your fast reply!

Unfortunately I cannot find a log file, because there is no subfolder "I-Novae Studios" in my documents folder. Maybe because the game hasn't been started yet?

That sounds like the problem. One user reported a similar issue last month, which was due to lack of writing access privileges to the Documents folder. We still do not understand why an app wouldn't be able to write to Documents but we'll work on figuring out a solution.

That's weird...
By the way, nothing changes when I run steam as an administrator.

Ok I think we've found the problem. Do you happen to have 'Controlled folder access' enabled for Windows Defender Ransomware Protection? If so please try disabling it and see if the game starts for you. Here's a screen shot of what it looks like: https://www.tenforums.com/attachments/tutorials/194448d1530639931-enable-disable-controlled-folder-access-windows-10-a-windows_defender_controlled_folder_access-3.jpg

I have the freeware version of Avira installed (without ransomware protection). I put the game exe on the white list, but that didn't solve the problem. Deactivating Avira didn't help either.

Verifying the game files didn't help, too...

So you checked your Ransomware Protection as outlined in that screenshot and it was disabled?

We just published a hotfix which *may* fix this problem for you. Please let us know if you can play the game now, thank you.

First of all, thank you for your efforts! :cozybethesda:

Unfortunately the hot fix didn't fix the problem. :(

My windows security options page looks different to your screenshot, because
I have installed Avira Antivirus, which replaces the default Windows 10 options. Windows Defender is disabled. Avira Antivirus does not have Ransomware protection (disabled), because it is the freeware version.

Adding the game exe to the whitelist or deactivating Avira Antivirus did not help.

Of course, I updated the graphics card driver and also executed Steam as an administrator. ;)

By the way, I also don't really believe that the problem is insufficient access rights to the Documents folder for two reasons:

(1) I would expect another error message. If the windows error about insufficient access rights is not caught in the program code (because no one thought about it), I think the original windows error message should be displayed.

(2) The error occurs immediately when starting the game exe. The error message indicates to me that something is going wrong during the initialization process of the application, for example:
  • Loading DLLs
  • Initializing data structures
  • etc.

If the log file in the Documents folder is created AFTER the very first initializations, this would explain why no log file (and no subfolder) is created.

Does the game require any external libraries that I may not have?

We found the cause of the issue, and we'll do a hotfix ( no eta yet though ) which addresses the problem. Sorry for the inconvenience, just a little bit more patience :)

Oh nice, that sounds great :) :cozybethesda:
Many thanks!

Hi Tharon, I believe I have fixed your problem however we won't be able to release it in a regular patch until there's extensive testing. If you can message me on our Discord I can send you a link to download a hotfix.

Hi Keith, you are awesome, ty :) :cozybethesda:

I downloaded and installed the fix. First the application asked for the VCRUNTIME140_1.dll which was not found. Some versions of the VC runtime are already installed on my system (of course), but I still installed the current VC runtime version 2019 (combined package for 2015-2019).

Now the exe is satisfied and started without any further complaints :)

The current VC runtime distributables can be downloaded at
https://support.microsoft.com/de-de/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads

Thanks again for your efforts! I didn't really expect you to be there for us today and even provide a fix. That's awesome and I really appreciate this! :cozybethesda:

Best regards
Tharon

Keith probably compiled the hotfix he sent you with a different version than what is the "official" Steam version, hence this weird dependency requirement. We'll include this hotfix in the next official patch and you should be sorted out :)
