At all? She seems to have just taken up that slot. I was kinda hoping it'd lead to some transformation or something.

From what I recall, the homely maiden's use is mostly as a red herring. If you take the path of least resistance and just agree to marry her, you lose the chance for the more interesting narrative choices. So her use is mostly to make the other choices more special and more rewarding for players who are making more deliberate decisions.

Ah, I thought I was missing some kind of "out of your love my ugly self has become a beautiful princess" plotline or something given the use of the word "homely". Kept picking her and going different places looking for the trick.

Being offered marriage by everyone you encounter is annoying in itself sometimes. Marrying the homely maiden early saves you the dialog choices. Yin and yang.
