I always try to stack as much wood in storage as I can since map 1... I think spending as much time as you can in first map could help a lot in your run...
as soon as waves gets complicated, I start to upgrade towers twice, since they only need wood and startwood which you already have at map 1
Upgrading turrets costs more wood, yes, but if that allows you to spend more time in the map, you should be gathering more wood than spending.
I got I think to level 24 raids in first map, so by the time I left I had tons of wood and stone...
I don't think the solution is spending less wood in defense, but to always gather as much as you can. Just be sure you have all wood nodes in the map active and not letting them to overflow your belts, and you should have more than enough wood.
If you don't try to get to level 20 threat at least, on every map, you'll get way less resources, and you'll spend a lot rebuilding everything for the next map.
Other than that, you got some good advice above, and we will also add some mid-tier defensive options which will help further. By the time you reach difficulty 4-5 you should probably have the metal walls and turrets, those help.
In my opinion, metal walls should cost copper and stone instead of copper and carbonite. walls should be something cheap and expendable... we're not generally on a lot of carbonite in storage, and you can get that in specific maps only...
It's ok to spend rare resources in upgrading stuff you take with you, but knowing you might lose half of your walls on every wave, and just throw that carbonite away I feel like it's not worth it, so I just prefer stacking more and more layers of wooden walls insted.
Both stone and copper can be produced on materializer, so you can ensure you'll always have enough of it, if you organize yourself well enough, so I think if this change is done, people would start using these walls a lot more, and reaching higher threat levels would be less painful
Great tips guys! its helping me think about strategy a bit more :)
I think its the fuel that makes the game very different at a point, before you just burn what you have, the moment you need to get it, you need to be on harder maps, and you get it slowly meanwhile if you've been upgrading your weight you burn a ton on each move.
After reading the patch notes I realized that the threat level would increase on the size of your city, I think one of my failings was that I focused on creating a large city over research and upgrades and fuel reserves.
maybe, what i did was queue up several research options and just played the game. the research will just go until its all done in the order you queue it. really helpful imo because i can focus on building, exploring, and defending waves.
I have built 6 or so level 4 wooden turrets and it's still hard to get passed 27
Definitely make sure you get a lot of workshop upgrades for your character to. Quite a bit of damage comes from his weapons.
