What if maybe instead it could allow you to reroll/override the gems of a card, destroying the previous one in the process of course. Either as a replacement for your suggestion, or a third option? Could make it so it only gives gems of the same rarity (or lower) for balance.
I like your idea, breaking the current gem and choose from 3 random new ones. It is more in the flavor of the current alchemist ability.
destroying a bad card is such a strong effect I'd like to keep it along with option 2. something like this:
option 1: destroy a card and craft a new one (current effect)
option 2: destroy a card and re-roll the gems on a current card
too strong maybe? you lose a bad card and don't have to replace it. I'm still new to this game but I know in most card games like this one, thinning your deck can be incredibly strong.
