A long-range, air-to-air missile was badly needed since the AIM-54 was retired along with the F-14. Despite the AMRAAM's various improvements (in range and ECM-resistance), it's still a "small" missile. The USN needed something bigger (carrying a bigger radar, more fuel, packing a bigger warhead), faster and with greater range, also to compensate the F/A-18' less-than-egregious range in the Air-to-Air mission in a very BIG theatre like the APAC.
I understand, most of the de-risking was made empploying the ship-based missile engaging ballistic targets in the Red Sea.

hope the next update is a big one with lots of good stuff, have been waiting for things like the SU-47 and production versions of the F-118 and F-32, i am existed for those aircraft and more
