Supply is determined by the amount of barrels you had in your possession (controlled by units or power tokens) the last time supply was adjusted. Supply is only adjusted when the Westeros/Wildling cards tell you so. 6/6 supply is the maximum amount you can have.
If you lose supply when supply is adjusted (you lost some barrels previously or its a wildling card effect), you have to destroy units to comply to the new maximum army number/sizes.
Keep in mind Supply isn't the unit strength but the unit number.
So if you can have 2 units on one space that can be any combination of troop type. A footman is 1 unit, a knight is 1 unit, a siege engine is 1 unit regardless of their combat strength.
And you can lose map locations with barrels and it won't effect your supply until you draw a card that has it adjusted. Only when a card says to adjust supply do you add or subtract your supply.
