ahh sobetter watch the dialogue options carefully or you can get him as easily like Jing wei?
I've seen him on every play through, unlike Jimmy, so he may always be there.
Don't know the last zone haven't been there yet BUT there are 3 special characters (from what we found out from gaming a bit) that have 4 perks and are quite good . they actually have some dialogue and a bit related to the plot.
the thing is: the 1st chick you find doing the questline JingWei you find her in the tavern after doing the event at bunker 818 (i think) but the 2nd guy which you can find is also in the 2nd zone too...needs special dialogue choices - EHM not spoilers but spoilers try not to kill the bird mask guy so save before you deliver the antibug crate that the mayor from Eagle town gives you and play around with the dialogue options
need to get the 3rd one the mechanic and see what he's specs are but from what HelloDarkness said he comes automatic like JingWei but need to get to that zone to check
2. SECOND COMPANION: JIMMY you'll find him in the big town tavern of the 3rd area IF you got the job to escort him and did his little side mission
3. third companion..ummmm Darkness knows more about him
I actually don't know if they have a bigger purpose or not..haven't finished the game yet , got bored or just restarted when didn't like certain circumstances but they're nice to have..would be awesome to have a depo or something to keep them there indefinetely - even if you have to pay if you want to rehire them
The first two require unlocking in that they show up in the story line. The mechanic in EW, I can't for the life of me think of a time he's come up pre-completion but seems to always be there. Like the other two he has 4 stats which only you and your starting companion have and is always there, week after week, even if you perform a refresh.
Have yet to have a party that any of them fit with, so haven't used them.
John's extra slot is kind of wasted as he has two mechanic slots and 2 combat slots, and by zone 5, mercs with S/A/A can be found and as the old saying goes, 'he who serves two masters, servers neither well.' I've stuck to that philosophy with him since at that point I'm building a 9 person party and I want my combat mercs to have 3 combat traits, and my mech never sees battle... so he's just never fit my play style, unlike the first two that have not once fit my party in terms of their character... wayyy too many negatives.
I feel like since they are special (and have relevance to the plot), they should be as easy to fit into whatever caravan as possible so it doesn't force players to give up on some extra dialogue if they don't want an imbalanced team.
