To the OP: Once you are out of the first zone, use the guilds to establish trade routes and it should more than cover your mercs wages. Even a minimal amount of trading yourself though should be plenty to keep them paid unless you're way over staffed for the area you are trading in. I don't usually get any mercs in Dune, (occasionally one) and in Gobi bring my party up to 3 or 4. It's Desert before I go up to 6. I focus on enough mercs to get the story line stuff done and try not to go over because I know I will be replacing them all in the Wildlands - though that tactic might change now that we can level up traits.
