Isle of Awakening super uneven/hard to build?
I was really happy how my first town turned out in Furrowfield, the terrain worked nicely for placing fields and creating a sorta centralized and elevated village.

But now I'm free to build in Awakening and the areas that they have you use worm foods on is just all sorts of messy and filled with sections of unbreakable stone here and there.

Heck, where did you guys choose to build your main town in this area?

try visiting other peoples islands from the board to get some ideas

Your hammer will improve, but you can always fill in spaces or flatten them out. I remember taking the whole space by the river down a few levels and building farms on the flat areas that were left.

Yeah, I guess I got no choice but to mow down large areas with the hammer and then make YET MORE worm food. >_>

Tip for better worm food coverage: it will only cover up to the elevation of the block you place the food on. So place it on a stack of blocks as high as the highest area in the square, if you want to cover the entire square.

Don't build yet, you should get a better hammer first. You'll also gain a bunch of other tricks and tools as you progress that'll help with forming the land.

Don't build yet, huh? Should I try to advance the story enough so I can travel to the next major island/civilization?

It's up to you but I suggest that you clear at least some targets on the stone tablet to get new utilities which help you with building.
I built some stuff on the island of awakening until I feeld that I stretched my (imaginitive) possibilites as far as possible then I decided to run the next island.

I'd advice that, yes. I build a little town on Isle of Awakening as well, but regretted it as I got much better and handier tools later on. Just being able to break those blocks with a better hammer was super helpful.
It's to each their own of course, but that's what I personally advice.

+1 to waiting.

It's best to wait until you beat the storymode. You get so many things that help, and access to much more materials. You will, of course, be forced to build something based on each civilization once each one is beat, but you'll eventually get full control over it without having to worry about the story ruining what you build.

What I suggest is not like the previous ones, but to achieve 10 tablet targets. This should be pretty easy to reach by building a restaurant, a farm and just plop down 4 scarecrows and plant 5 different seeds and go flood a big area of the island.

Also finish the scavenger hunts on the explorer islands, that should put you in a pretty decent spot where making it through the story islands so much faster. And after that you got the tools to level the whole thing you build to the ground and clean up your island and make it what you want to be.

So yes to build, but do not worry about the layout and the looks and skip large terraforming projects.

Well, I skipped to the second story island without building anything. I'm at the point where I need to find the second half of the flute thing. I also really like how this base is turning out—was worried about lack of space but once you get the Silver Bar area opened up you get a lot more room to grow.

Anyways, not sure what I'll do after this desert island story is over with. I might build a few things on the island or just rush into what I assume is gonna be the third and final story island. Probably some mountain/snow area...

Well once you got the trowel, there is realy no need to do more of the tablets, and after island 3 you will get even better tools to build.

Also you want to have that ultimallet that you will only get after you fully complete the story, and going to spoil it a bit for you it is going to take longer then you think ;)

That is really not true. In fact the last tool you get from completing all of the tablet challenges is the best item in the game. It really makes building much better.
