Online Multiplayer Sandbox Mode?

I'm interested in buying the game so that me and a bro have something to play. What can you do in online sandbox mode? Is it like survival in Minecraft? Like collect stuff, build, and survive monsters?

Note, I have never played a Dragon Quest game. Always wanted to but been too lazy lol

Co-op is a bit limited. The game has a main campaign you basically have to play through to really unlock much of its features, and you have to solo the campaign. About 10-15 hours into the main campaign you will unlock a multiplayer portal that will allow you to invite your friends onto an island you can all build on. There is no creative mode, you have to go find or make everything you want. It is survival based, you have a food meter and hit points and monsters do spawn, constantly.

You don't die when food drops to zero 0%, you just slow down a lot. You can also craft HP restoring items that can be spammed—so if you have like 100 of them, you can basically never die.
