Can you change your hairstyle later?
Default one for girls is mega ugly.

If not, I'll just play as a dude. It's not a huge deal, just curious.

Yes. If you go find the Dressing Table on IOA (canyon in the east, almost midway between north and south) before sailing for Furrowfield, you can switch to the Historic Hairband or Wavy Locks for women (or Historic Hairband and Dandy Doo for men.) Wavy Locks is one of the most popular women's styles based on photos. (It's what I use for my builder, too.) You have to deal with the double ponytails (or male Super Saiyan) styles until then. If you're playing the demo, you'll only get Historic Hairband at that point.

You'll get more hairstyles and headwear as the story progresses, either by doing tasks at Angler's Isle, by trading in Mini Medals, and upon completing Blue Tablet Target #6. Dressing Table is the only place to apply them. You can change gender there, too, so if you start with male you can switch to female. You can also change hair, eye, and skin color (but can't change name until quite a bit later.)

Neat. I started as a dude, but picked a gender-neutral name just in case it didn't let me change mine.

Also my ideal kinda hairstyle is simple short hair (like what you sometimes start with in animal crossing) but really I'll be glad just to not look like discount hatsume miku. XD

I like the spiky hair the guys start with though, I wish the girls looked cool when they started. :(

I didn't have a problem with how it looked - my issue was how the ponytails would always clip through the book backpack no matter what you were doing. Fine character design by Akira Toriyama, but not workable as a 3D model - either ponytails or book backpack, but not both.

That seems like an... actual problem ngl. >_>;

I'd never pick something that girly if given a choice so I'd probably never have noticed. I'm glad I started as a guy now though because that would've driven me insane. XD

I missed the chance to change appearance and am now doing Furrowfield's quests. (I maxed out the base actually, kinda forgot about the worn dresser... XD) I can go back and do that later right?

Or is there someplace on THIS island I can do it?

No Dressing Table on Furrowfield and you can't make one yet so you're currently stuck with what you got. You can change it upon return to Isle of Awakening (assuming playing full game and not demo.) But not everyone knows you can find the Dressing Table and change your style before heading off to Furrowfield.

I actually went with girl builder myself becuase a) I'd played boy in DBQ1, b) the spiky hair was blocking my view ahead when I played in demo, c) cuter vocals. On my five playthroughs I've gone girl three times and boy twice, but prefer the girl for the vocals. I've only changed gender in-game a few times for photographs, when male looks better (like jeans for a cowboy outfit: https://en.dragonquest-builders.com/detail/?c=nsANdr6AWK&e=392136776099049472 )
