The mini medals themselves give a few different things:
1. Purely cosmetic items that you can only see at the dressing table
2. Music sheets that can be played at an instrument (shows up in inventory)
3. Recipes for "costume" armor that do show up in your inventory once made but are better off used as cosmetic due to low defense
4. Liquid metal equipment recipes (best raw DEF/ATK in game)
If so, you should have the cosmetic items Geeky Specs (1 mini medal) and Bow (10) but will only see these at a Dressing Table. You should also be granted a Player's Lyre and 'Bustling Streets' music sheet at 4 mini medals - these would go into your inventory. Or your bag if you're holding the max number of items. I'm not sure how they aren't in your inventory if you made the trade with the Hairy Hermit. (Unless all seven pages of your bag are full, in which case I really don't know what happens to the items he gives you. I presume they just fall to the ground like others do when full.)
