You can also use the 1 key when out of first-person mode to get into 'look down' mode, where you place things 1 level beneath your feet and 3 to place one level above your head - but these are pretty restrictive and janky - they can be useful, but first person is usually better.
Much later, you get a tool to vastly expand the reach of first person item placement.
Without stepping stones you can reach only 4 levels.
1. Normal building when there is a hole before you and no adjanced blocks or press 1 to look down - reaches level below the current level, level -1.
2. Normal building or pressing 2 to avoid vertical adjustments - reaches current level, level 0.
3. Normal building when there is already a block before you or pressing 3 - reaches level above the current level, level 1.
4. Pressing 3 and jumping before placing a block - reaches one level higher, level 2.
To reach other levels you need to build temporary blocks or use ladders to reach already available platforms. You can build ladders on walls while climbing them so there is no need to use extra blocks in this case - you just place first ladder and start climbing while placing new ladders above your head.
