It's best if you just manage your friendlies by having them wait in certain areas where you know they'd have trouble navigating.
Other than that, no matter how lost they get you'll have them in the next level assuming they're still alive, so all in all don't stress yourself over babysitting them.
Great game by the way, makes me feel like Sakuya Izayoi from Touhou when i use the time shard, except for throwing knives i throw axe's with the power of a meteorite.
