Completely without heroes?
Hallo! I have watched many gameplays, read many AARs, forums - many people complain about easy campaign even on the Generalissimus difficulty.

But on the other hand nobody mentions whether the person plays with heroes or completely without any heroes.

From my experience any heroes during the game are a huge cheat for the player and make the way through enemy's formations super easy: superheroes' combo + overstrength + placed right => every enemy is easily ruined => and then these players spam everywhere with requests:
- lack of challenge;
- too easy encirclements;
- tons of prestige stockpiled;
And everybody "forgets" to mention several heroes who have brought the triumph.

In my campaign I am now playing completely without any heroes. No heroes on the start, no heroes during the campaign, no Killer team option.
And thus no prestige surplus and always under pressure.

Am I the only one who plays completely without any heroes?

Hope I am not alone playing completely without any heroes and hope to get some advice from the experienced players whether it is worth playing or it is a waste of time as the game design requires heroes to reach all the tasks within the turn limit.

Also some AAR from players who are in their campaigns as me completely without any heroes are much appreciated.

Thanks!

I also play without heroes, but I can't give you much of advice since I'm only at Kharkov '42 at the moment. Playing on General, it was a walk in a park until Moscow. Took heavy casualties there and had to spent almost all of my prestige on reinforcements alone. Karl is a game changer even without heroes, I'd say it's even more valuable this way. Oh, and I play without the turn limit, though I haven't had a situation where I would run out of turns just yet.

There are two active AARs on the Slitherine boards with no heroes -- mine is one of them[www.slitherine.com] -- so it's perfectly possible. Not everyone wants to play with demigods who delete enemies at will, but prestige stockpiling is inevitable if you capture enemies due to the game design; even on Generalissimus you get the full prestige values.

I think heroes are good fun, but sadly, there are many that are very situational - and a few that are too powerful, especially when combined.

So I limit myself to max 1 hero per unit and don't really move them around after they have been assigned.

There are still a few heroes that do very useful things, but they are more like a little boost than a full OMG THIS IS JUST BONKERS.

My favourite is now the Vigilant hero: no access to close def on a unit. Park a Tiger in a city and walk all over infantry. As unfair as it gets, but somehow quite fun, too. Completely changes how one can play the game and that is worth something, too.
