How does save game work?
I've saved the game both manually and with auto save but the next time I loaded I found that enemy units I had killed or hexes that I had captured were not reflected on the map.
Is it best to press "end turn", and then save or save prior to pressing "end turn"?

There is no way for a save game to add units or change the control of hexes by itself. It cannot happen. It would only make changes if there were changes in game. Auto save saves at the beginning of the turn and at the end of your turn. Those will be different as one does not reflect what you did during your turn and the other one does.

As to when it is best to save that does not really matter UNLESS you are trying to do a risky attack and then reload the pre attack when it goes bad. I tend to only do saves when I want to end the game for that session. Rest of the time I rely on auto saves.

Whenever I do a manual save, I always edit the default name by removing (Turn #) then I'll add something like "Arras 2aBc" and save it. It always brings me back to the point I saved it at. It doesn't matter where you save it beginning, during or end of the turn it'll bring you back to the time and place you saved it.

I'm not saying that it adds units or changes control of hexes. I'm saying that in certain cases the game does not save the exact state that the game is in when you press save game in the menu. Therefore when you load that save, the situation in the game is different from when you saved.
I think what I described will happen if you make a few moves in your turn and then make a save. What ever you killed or what ever hexes were captured (or any other changes) will not be captured when you load that save.
It's happened to me several times. So it can and does happen.

Ah, good clue. Up until now I've not altered the name but just accepted what was in the window. Pretty clueless of me. Thanks.

That is exactly what you are implying. Again the game saves the state of the game at that time. Not something that happens later, or before. If your saves are not exactly what was in game at the moment of save then there is something going on. You might have malware running on your PC and it is changing data on you. Do you have the save issue with other games?

Regardless of the file name you save under it will NOT change the saved data in anyway. The default save name is just what the programmer set up. It will not matter what you save as the file saved stays the same.

When you save do you exit the game without playing any more? Or do you play a bit longer?

If you are playing a bit longer then not saving again, then what you describe makes total sense. The file was saved at the time you saved it. Then you played a bit more and do not save again. When you load the file it will be what was going on when it was saved not what was going on when you left the game.

No I'm not playing any longer. I quit after I save. I can save other games.

That's not what I'm implying in the least. Not recording is different from changing.

What I have now discovered is that I cannot now save at all either automatically or manually. I got up to turn 14 in the Voronezah (sp?) scenario in the saves list in both manual and auto and if I press end of turn the game will go to turn 15 but I can't save that, no matter what name I give it. Turn 14 is the latest save available to load.

Edit:
I had previously included the steam/common/Panzer...2 game folder as an exception in Protected Folders.
Now I have also included documents/mygames/Panzercorps2 (that's where the saves are stored) as and exception in Protected Folders. Now I can save manually and automatically again.
Before doing this, no saved games were visible in the saves folder in that directory.
After doing it, all the saved games appear there.
I don't know if it's coincidental or cause and effect but apparently saves are back in business and that's good enough.

When you save the PC takes a snapshot of the game. it is FROZEN in time. IF your saves are not recording as you say there is another issue. How full is your hard drive? I am not attacking you or putting you down I am trying to help. IF the HD is near capacity that might explain what you is happening. It is also possible that your hard drive is about to crash.

I explained what I think is happening just above your latest post.

Having folders protected does NOT affect save info it is either it saves or it does not. Protected folders will not allow you to save, The files in the protected folder are locked. Did you protect them? That they were not visible and are now visible does not answer the question I asked, nor invalidate it. What you have described happening will not happen period. I was trying to help you figure out what MAY be happening. You gave little to no info and when I asked about it I did not understand according to you. You are right I did not because what you SAID was happening CANNOT happen. The save file is changing on its own according to you. The only way to change a file is to save over it. Some Malware will do that. If for some reason the data was damaged while saving you would get a corrupted file and it would not load at all. I used the term implied to be polite. PC's do not work that way. You said you did not imply something, you are correct you flat out stated it happens. Again PC's do not do that. SO AGAIN there is something more going on. Or you are trolling. Either way I hope your all knowing self is happy when you have your HD crash. IF what you posted is true there are some serious things wrong on your PC. I tried I am sorry that I wasted time trying to help you good luck.

Again you are not explaining the whole picture. And I have read everything you posted 2 or 3 times before replying. This was the 1st time you said you used ctrl-S to save. SO based on the new info yes you could be getting an old save because it is not saving. That would explain what you described. But you never explained it that way until now. And I am wrong because you failed to explain things even when I asked questions to try to clarify?

But again there is something about this that is off. IF your folder was protected and you suddenly unprotected it where did all the saves magically appear from? And yet again you ignore the questions I asked. If you are the only person using the PC and YOU did not make the folders protected then who did? How did they get turned on? And if you share the PC you need to talk to the other(s) about messing around with settings. IF they do the wrong things you will have bigger problems.

We're locking this thread as it is non-productive. Thank you for understanding.
