As to when it is best to save that does not really matter UNLESS you are trying to do a risky attack and then reload the pre attack when it goes bad. I tend to only do saves when I want to end the game for that session. Rest of the time I rely on auto saves.
I think what I described will happen if you make a few moves in your turn and then make a save. What ever you killed or what ever hexes were captured (or any other changes) will not be captured when you load that save.
It's happened to me several times. So it can and does happen.
Regardless of the file name you save under it will NOT change the saved data in anyway. The default save name is just what the programmer set up. It will not matter what you save as the file saved stays the same.
When you save do you exit the game without playing any more? Or do you play a bit longer?
If you are playing a bit longer then not saving again, then what you describe makes total sense. The file was saved at the time you saved it. Then you played a bit more and do not save again. When you load the file it will be what was going on when it was saved not what was going on when you left the game.
That's not what I'm implying in the least. Not recording is different from changing.
What I have now discovered is that I cannot now save at all either automatically or manually. I got up to turn 14 in the Voronezah (sp?) scenario in the saves list in both manual and auto and if I press end of turn the game will go to turn 15 but I can't save that, no matter what name I give it. Turn 14 is the latest save available to load.
Edit:
I had previously included the steam/common/Panzer...2 game folder as an exception in Protected Folders.
Now I have also included documents/mygames/Panzercorps2 (that's where the saves are stored) as and exception in Protected Folders. Now I can save manually and automatically again.
Before doing this, no saved games were visible in the saves folder in that directory.
After doing it, all the saved games appear there.
I don't know if it's coincidental or cause and effect but apparently saves are back in business and that's good enough.
But again there is something about this that is off. IF your folder was protected and you suddenly unprotected it where did all the saves magically appear from? And yet again you ignore the questions I asked. If you are the only person using the PC and YOU did not make the folders protected then who did? How did they get turned on? And if you share the PC you need to talk to the other(s) about messing around with settings. IF they do the wrong things you will have bigger problems.
