OHRENTHAL
Hi Slitherine Team,

Thanks for this exciting new campaign. I have a quick feedback : the actual name of the village is misspelled. It's Ohrenthal, not Orenthal :-)

My written source says Orenthal, despite modern digital sources listing it as Ohrenthal.

(Marshall Cavendish Illustrated Encyclopedia)

How certain are you that this is the historical name and not just the modern one?

I ivestigated this myself, even on french web sites. Apparently the term Orenthal and a few very similar ones were used during the 18th century, maybe also still in the 19th century. But since the 20th century Ohrenthal came into place. So at the time of the 2nd World war it already should been Ohrenthal, like today.

Hi !

In order to be sure, I have just sent an email to the townhall of the town to which Ohrenthal now belongs to. I will keep you updated.

Can you imagine that e-mail?

Dear Frenchies,

This game where you play as the Wehrmacht to take over the world makes reference of your lovely French town. We fight a huge battle there as part of the Saar Offensive scenarios. I was wondering if you could tell us some history behind the name of your town. Coordinating artillery fire is confusing my units who don't know if they need to shell Orenthal or Ohrenthal.

Please let us know some of the history behind the name, so we can mark it for artillery strike appropriately on our battle maps.

Sincerely,
A gamer

The funny thing is that the e-mail I wrote was quite similar to what you have imagined :-D

But being myself a Frenchie will surely help.

I look forward to receiving an answer

I have received an official statement from the assistant of the Mayor, confirming the spelling Ohrenthal (already in 1940) :-D

Most intriguing! Merci beaucoup for your efforts!

More interesting, Ohrenthal is the correct spelling in german, not Orenthal. At least in modern german. The meaning is Ears-Dale when translated exactly.

Can we see this email here?

You can scrub out any names or the address itself, of course.

If we can adjust the map... (changing name is complex, especially a major name that is in the scenario title and briefing and hex strings)

Would you like one of the French hero units named in your honor?

How about

"Kirk de Fer"

A nod to

Nicolas de Fer

"The French cartographer Nicolas de Fer was less a scientist than he was an artist. De Fer lived during the 17th-18th centuries, and is known for producing over 600 very beautiful maps. His father, Antoine de Fer, started the family business of mapmaking and engraving, which Nicolas later took over. Though his maps probably wouldn’t have won any prizes for geographical accuracy, they were prized for their sheer beauty and decorative qualities. The beauty of his maps was enough to get Nicolas de Fer a royal appointment as the geographer for the French Dauphin, the Duke of Anjou."

Hi Kerensky,

that's such a kind proposal !

What about staying with Nicolas de Fer ? The private joke will be just great :-)

PS: I have just finished the 2nd DLC. I have enjoyed it even more than the first one. As a result, I am starting the game over back to Spain with lots of ideas and strategies to test. I look forward to DLC #3 !

kind regards,

Pat
