Secret Reward Units a la PZ1
I can confirm that there are secret units rewarded to the player upon capping strategically valueless, out of the way villages and such. A blessing and a curse.

interesting. I only went 1 village "deep" down the roads past primary and secondary objectives.

Missions 1 and 2 have secret units. Nothing after that. I just spent an hour cheating through the whole campaign so I wouldn't have to stress about that during a real generalissimus playthrough.
Spoiler
reward is 203 mm artillery

Second mission, northern flag - where your Italian auxilla starts.

thanks! I did capture that flag and didn’t get the reward, but now I wonder if that’s because one of my traits forbade that sort of unit., If so it makes the tread less good than I’d hoped

From what I recall:
The first hidden cache is on the Rock of Gibraltar -- need a unit that can enter high mountains, so preferably a (split) infantry. It contains 19 203mm parts.
The second hidden cache is in a village to the east of the northern airfield with the AA gun in the second scenario, near the top of the map. This one conatains 10 203mm and 10 122mm parts.

I run with no Artillery trait. Its how i get artillery. The trait just means you cannot buy artillery, NOT that you cant field artillery.

The second cache has some other artillery spare parts too, not just the big gun.

Redundant caches are important, because it serves as a 'refill' for your spare parts. Taking damage to captured units requires finite spare parts replacements.

Antequera, the village in hex 20,4.

And how do you even get a unit on the rock of Gibraltar?

if you wait for the spanish ships to bombard the cadiz units, you can slip out with a transport towards gibraltar, if you are lucky, it wont get spotted, and from there just a few turn of sailing, a full unit might be lucky and survive a single attack or two, but don't rely on this.
