Run down on units and effects please
I just finished Poland and started playing the northern theatre of norway and I'm getting absolutely wrecked. My infantry seems massively weaker, I have no idea which is the "best" infantry to use and so have spammed pioneers then standard werhmacht to no avail, andI just keep getting rolled.

Also, I have no idea how mass attack work. Does it automatically work when i attack the enemy for each unit, or do I have to wait a turn, what do i do bois?

Grenadiers: Slow, but good defense. Best infantry in open fields.
Fallschirm: Can jump out of planes, good offensive stats.
Gebirgs: Weaker than Wehr normally, but your best infantry in hills and mountains. Most fighting in Norway South and almost all in Norway North are in hills or mountains, outside the city/town hexes.
Pioneers: Close terrain monsters in general, perfect for assaulting entrenched enemies.

Your infantry is actually exactly equal to most enemy infantry outside of more unique units (except for the to-hit bonus enemy units get on higher difficulties), which the Norwegians have none of - in fact, you're not going to meet unique enemy infantry until after France.

In infantry-heavy slugfests, you want artillery support closely backing up your guys. Having even just an leFh 18 backing up your unit helps a lot on the defensive by suppressing enemy infantry before their attack starts. sFh 18s can even do it to tanks, too. And offensively, always hit your target with artillery and ideally air support first.

Mass attack is initiated if multiple of your units (other than recon and pioneers) are in contact with the targetted enemy and still have their attack action. It gives your attacking unit an initiative bonus. IE, more of your guys may shoot first depending on the initiative of both units.

Work through the tutorials first. Then any advice you get will make sense and many of the questions you have will be answered already.

In addition to the tutorials I'd suggest going to Youtube and watching some of the videos on there, some very good tips from experienced players. I will tell you that on Norway I convert all my corps infantry to mountain troops since almost every hex is hills you get their bonuses on almost every engagement.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Cheers

bro i played on an easier difficulty and gave myself more prestige, I found that it was mostly the result of playing with too small an army by this scenario and wasting all the prestige in poland north refilling my troops.

Seems like some fronts are just downright better as well, with poland south giving you more troops and better artillery and Norway south not having that absolutely awful british naval battle

Naval battles can be a bit awkward, but you can win them. You need a strategic bomber (or two) to help your navy and submarines are an auto win vs capital ships. You basically use your capital ships to kill destroyers, subs to kill capital ships and destroyers are just to run away or kill severely damaged ships. Norway North isn't particularly hard, you just need to use your support units properly. If you try to rambo your way through, it isn't going to end well.

Artillery and air force. The more you can bombard and airstrike the weaker the ground forces (and navy) will be. You don't really need all that many ground troops, maybe just four or five, since one group will slowly advance north and the other will blitz south. The rest can and should be artillery pieces and aircraft. No tanks!
