When are Fallschirmjager a good choice?
Their initative is better but nearly all their other stats including their defense are worse than Wehr, Grenadiers, or Gebirgsjager.

I find them to be very special case units. When you have access to air transport, and have opportunities to potential form colossal encirlcements... paratroopers get the job done like nobody's business.

Yeah I agree that using them for encirclements seems the best way to use them but I also like having one act as a “mobile” infantry unit that I can fly to wherever I need an extra infantry unit.

Like for example I was playing Barbarossa south and used my fallschrimjager to help take the first set of cities and airfields in the north before flying them south to assist the Romanian forces by flanking a city and killing off artillery and other support units before helping to encircle and take the town.

I wouldn’t use fallschrimjager in every scenario and I would definitely be careful with them since they can be pretty expensive to repair but they do have a few nice uses that makes having 1 kicking around in reserve worthwhile.

A pair of Fallschirmjägers can be useful to capture a far away victory point. They immediately encircle the city and if only defended by a single unit can capture the city in the next turn. That can speed up things, earning you some additional prestige. Apart from such opportunities, my fallschirmjägers mostly sit in my reserve pool.

I enjoy paras when I get them as auxiliaries.

And don't forget they can take off again if you drop them close to an airfield.

But otherwise a big meh.

I also hate that they have magic planes that don't return to base. Maybe the lamest thing in the game... Rework the plane mechanics, keep one plane different. Ehh...

They can also magically drop without flak firing... And can't attack when they land. A better mechanic would be to incur some suppression when landing, and allow no movement after the drop. Misdrops don't matter when you can just immediately adjust...

I really don't like the Para implementation :steammocking:

They are basically useless. They were useless in Panzer Corps 1 too. You can lose two thirds or more of a "division" to a single fighter unit shooting them out of the sky. Once they land they are beaten by basically every unit on the board.

They also have the bunker buster trait like engineers.

Which is decent at Eben-Emael but mostly useless.

You need a map with lots of airports. I bought a bunch for the Norwegian invasion thinking that I could rush that central airport and fling them across the map. However the airport proved hard to take and by the time I could get my Fsjgrs in place, regular infantry was already halfway up and down the map. I ended up marching the Fsjgrs like regular troops.

So a D-Day-like mass paratroop isn't going to happen very often. As above, encirclement seems to be their bag. Maybe a random map where you can control the air and there are lots of islands? Once you land a Fsjgr on an island with no port or airport, they are stuck.

Basically, when they can earn you more prestige than their cost+reinforcements. In theory you could use them to cripple the enemy by taking airports and supply points, but that's tricky. You'll mostly use them to take that difficult-to-reach last objective. So, only if the terrain is very difficult or you're struggling with the time limit.

Hero that gives them no retaliation if they have superior initiative is a very useful setup for them, given their advantage over other Infantry. As is my one Falls squad i picked up in Norway I plop down in every mission.

They are OP in rare conditions like seeing the weather change to rain and being able to take an enemy airport, insta-gibbing every plane at that airport. I've killed 4 enemies in one turn that way, but it's happened like 2-3 times in a total campaign.

I think they should give then a better close defense bonus, better stats overall, paratroopers were considered the elite and the ability to attack after dropping, same goes for transports the ability to attack once they land. I think they should be infantry killers but suck against tanks.
