I think one of the developers said that you got +1 to attack with a halftrack but due to an error it did not show properly in the purchase menu

used to be that halftracks traveled faster on roads than full track vehicles. haven't paid attention to see if that is still true.

half tracks give a attack bonus to their infantrie unit. u can see the bonus when u hit L after a battle in the result. i think its +4 against soft and +1 against hard targets.

Just look at the combat log (L button) after an attack and you'll see.

I think the primary reason for upgrading to a half-track is mobility. Wheeled vehicles have a higher base movement speed but are affected more severely by difficult terrain. Mouseover hexes to see the movement costs for that terrain. Also, I have not played far enough in the campaign to see if persistent weather affects the terrain, like rain->mud or snow->deep snow/frozen, but, if it does, then half-tracks would be less affected than wheeled vehicles.
